LW Design was tasked with crafting an innovative contemporary dining experience right in the lobby of the renowned Dubai Edition Hotel in the heart of Downtown Dubai. This space features stunning interior design and a remarkable outdoor terrace offering breathtaking views of the Burj Khalifa.
The government has implemented stringent rules to minimize the visibility of alcohol in public areas across the UAE. This complex brief demanded a thorough understanding of the brand's needs to develop an extraordinary food and beverage establishment that not only pushed the boundaries of creativity but also embraced LW Design's approach to designing with the latest trends in a simple, organic style. With over 20 years of experience in the region, LW Design is always in tune with Dubai's dynamic and ever-evolving food and beverage scene, understanding how dining preferences have shifted over time. Creating Duomo was a unique challenge due to its location in the lobby, which is a daring move in the Dubai market.
Duomo required a deliberate design strategy to strike the perfect balance between adhering to local regulations and interpreting the brand's vision, all while delivering the high level of detail expected from LW as a premier design firm. The restaurant's design flows seamlessly from the lobby and is elevated by a few steps, creating a grand entrance. The establishment is set apart by a faux façade and bright yellow chesterfield sofas along the edges. The center is anchored by comfortable round banquettes upholstered in soft leather, fostering a cozy atmosphere even within the large, open space. The clever arrangement of seating allows each guest unrestricted views of the dramatic arched ceiling and the captivating artwork by Onion Lab in Barcelona. Duomo celebrates opulence and the elegance of Italian design at the heart of Dubai, capturing the essence of people coming together in the lively atmosphere it fosters.
The arched ceiling is, without a doubt, the highlight and most photographed feature of the expansive lobby and restaurant area. LW Design has intentionally kept the lighting low for a more intimate yet sophisticated dining atmosphere. Nighttime, a series of impressive images is projected onto the ceiling, creating an ambient yet dynamic display that transitions from abstract patterns to scenes reminiscent of classic art. The artwork is in perfect harmony with the music, enhancing the theatrical dining experience.
The outdoor terrace is filled with plants and carefully placed terracotta pots and olive trees, creating cozy seating areas for guests. They can enjoy the stunning views of the Burj Khalifa skyline or face the interior dome to admire the various frescoes that change over time, taking them on a journey through imagined Italy.
The grand ceiling, adorned with a domed finish, is covered in sound-absorbing plaster to reduce any reflection of sound. This process was carried out twice to achieve the perfect acoustic characteristics. The strategic use of a timber band serves to alter the visual perspective, creating a perception of a lower and more comfortable space for viewing. However, visitors will still appreciate the expansive nature of the space, feeling snug within their designated areas.
The outdoor patio is bathed in a soft light from candles and concealed lights within pots, offering a welcoming and intimate ambiance within a garden retreat at Dubai’s core amidst the city’s hustle and bustle. The lighting scheme was meticulously crafted by Isometrix, London, to ensure a sophisticated dining experience. The terrace’s ceiling arches are brightly lit during the day, with lighting dimmed for the start of the projection art show at 7 pm.
Features Include: Projector Screen and Acoustic Ceiling System.
The ceiling utilizes acoustic plaster, solid wood floors, and oak veneer walls, all in matching colors, along with matching travertine.
Every piece of furniture is locally created with the utmost care for quality and detail. The marble fronts of the tables have copper bases that lend a touch of sophistication to the otherwise neutral design. Bright yellow Chesterfield couches are arranged along the restaurant’s exterior walls to enhance the theatrical atmosphere. Chairs for the outdoor area are of Vincent Shepherd design.
